Meet Kyla Hartunian, M.A., M.Ed.

​As a certified 7-12 English and composition teacher, adjunct professor of postsecondary freshman composition courses, and educational consultant, I bring over 15 years of educational experience from preschool to postsecondary contexts. My passion for teaching and dedication to student success have been the driving forces behind my career. I am committed to fostering a love for learning, honing critical thinking skills, and empowering students to express themselves effectively through a variety of multimodal composition techniques.

My goal —whether as a teaching coach, mentor, curriculum developer, or educational consultant —is to think about ways to center critical thinking and civil discourse from a writing process approach. This means that regardless of my role, I am always seeking ways to practically implement critical inquiry and problem-solving opportunities into curriculum and classroom management using a variety of innovative, results-based writing and dialogue-centered teaching methods.
In other words, we must balance
a write-to-learn mindset with a learn-to-write process.
Some of my recent projects for the classroom have focused on implementing place-based education, prioritizing personalized learning and differentiated instruction alternatives, and developing hands-on activities and learning experiments, like multigenre portfolio projects and AI content writing. Yet, my research digs deeper into that process by finding ways to co-construct and deliver content using embodied writing practices, such as creating calm and welcoming learning environments, customizing classroom activities to build healthy relationships, and integrating holistic methods like breathing and other multi sensory techniques as part of the writing process. It is my goal to center education and teachable moments from this perspective in order to address the needs of the whole-learner (rather than "a student who happens to be in my classroom").
In this way, I help foster a holistic, embodied learning mindset that I believe is the foundation and the future of education.

Learning to write and communicate effectively is a lifelong skill.
